Felix C. Blanco, M.D.

General Surgery

In many ways, Dr. Blanco’s humble beginnings shaped his future. He was born and raised in La Paz, Bolivia where the quality of medical care was poor and access limited. Lack of surgeons and adequate facilities was especially acute. In his desire to make a difference, he decided to pursue a medical education and specialize in surgery.

Dr. Blanco completed medical school at the Higher University of San Andres in La Paz, Bolivia. As a medical student, he noticed first-hand that the dedication that surgeons showed to their patients was unique and highly motivating. Seeking the best education and surgical career possible, he moved to Washington, D.C. He completed his general surgery residency at Howard University Hospital, followed by a clinical research fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children’s National Medical Center. Motivated to gain experience in the latest surgical techniques, Dr. Blanco moved to Minnesota in 2013 for abdominal transplant surgery training during his fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

Dr. Blanco’s surgical and procedure specialties include:

  • Adult and Pediatric Trauma
  • Minimally Invasive Breast Cancer Surgery
  • Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery; Parathyroid Surgery is minimally invasive using a Gama Camera
  • All forms of General Surgery of the GI Tract
  • Laparoscopic Gallbladder, Hernia, and Anti-reflux Surgery (GERD repair)
  • Upper and Lower Endoscopy
  • Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery
  • Hemodialysis Access
  • Endovenous Laser Therapy
  • Cardiac Pacing

Dr. Blanco is a Diplomate of The American Board of Surgery, an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.

His diverse knowledge, training, and experiences have given him the background to understand and address his patients’ needs before, during and after surgery. Dr. Blanco believes prevention and early disease detection are keys to improving medical care, along with coordination with other providers and support staff. His philosophy is that the best care is given when the patient participates in developing their plan of care and strongly encourages patient involvement.

Dr. Blanco joined Glacial Ridge Health System in June of 2015. He was attracted to GRHS by the teamwork, collaboration, and how the medical staff works together toward a common mission “provide heartfelt care.” Dr. Blanco also saw an excellent opportunity to serve the community and balance work with his personal life. He and his wife, Maggie, along with their children, appreciate what a small town can offer – a sense of community, fresh air, and easy access to nature and outdoor activities.

In his spare time, Dr. Blanco enjoys photography, drawing and handcrafting; working with his hands gives him a sense of peace and happiness.
