Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)

  • Performs treatment methods appropriate to the diagnosis, age group, and patient’s physical and emotional status as directed by the Occupational Therapist.
  • Follows comprehensive treatment plans to improve functional status of patient.
  • Demonstrates essential skill competencies in the use of treatment modalities, equipment and protocols.
  • Applies knowledge of therapeutic techniques throughout the course of treatment and adjusts the treatment plan appropriately as patient status changes within scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates current knowledge of the application of therapeutic techniques as evidenced by documentation, medical records, and observation.
  • Demonstrates creative problem solving when adapting the treatment to special circumstances as evidenced by team feedback and documentation.
  • Abide by state practice act and ensure quality patient care.
  • Communicate discharge planning to supervising Occupational Therapist.
  • Adheres to department policies regarding timeframe, form and content of progress notes and physician communication.
  • Completes daily progress notes that reflect patient’s response to treatment, actual performance, and assessment as to status, relevant to the treatment plan and eventual discharge needs.
  • Documents clearly, concisely and legibly within established timeframes (e.g. allows other therapists to continue treatment, allows for interpretation by payers, supports reimbursement).
  • Documents evidence of patients and family/caregiver education when appropriate.
  • Communicates effectively with patient, family, medical staff, care team members, students, supervisors and outside contacts.
  • Provides educational materials and methods appropriate to the patient’s level of understanding and motivation as evidenced by chart review, observation, and team feedback.
  • Demonstrates collaboration in communication with team members and is open to feedback and receptive to change as evidenced by team feedback.
  • Gives appropriate instruction and supervision to assistive personnel consistent with program/clinic policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains productivity standards set by department/clinic and makes efficient use of non-billable time, minimizing use of non-billable times.
  • Completes routine administrative responsibilities within established timeframes consistently (e.g. time cards, coverage notes, and charge entry).
  • Participate in select facility committees and serve as departmental liaison.
  • Complies with all appropriate facility education and training.
  • Perform relevant duties as assigned by manager.
  • Provides Home Care as directed by OT.
  • Perform long-term care treatments consistent with OT plan of care, nursing home guidelines and regulations, and participate in care conferences and interdisciplinary communication.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of an Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Licensed as an Occupational Therapist Assistant in the state of Minnesota.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 3 months of hire.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Team building.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and equipment of occupational therapy.
  • Must adhere to HIPAA confidentiality standards.
  • Must adhere to the Keys to Heartfelt Care.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position.
