Glacial Ridge Health System Offers New Treatment for Chronic Pain

Glacial Ridge Health System now offers COOLIEF Cooled Radiofrequency Treatment, which is a non-invasive, outpatient option for sufferers of chronic pain.

Family medicine provider Dr. Gustave Mellgren is certified to provide the COOLIEF treatment, which is intended for those with chronic pain that has lasted longer than three months. Dr. Mellgren can treat those with chronic pain in the shoulder, hip, knee, or sacroiliac joint at the base of the spine—which is usually felt in the low back or leg.

COOLIEF’s radiofrequency treatment does not involve medications or physical therapy, which are often used to care for those suffering from chronic joint pain. COOLIEF is a treatment option when other conservative/traditional treatment options haven’t helped.

The minimally invasive procedure uses cooled radiofrequency energy to pinpoint the nerves that are causing the pain. Water circulates through the COOLIEF device while the tissues are heated, enabling it to treat a larger area than similar types of radiofrequency systems. This allows the nerves that cause the pain to be targeted—without over-heating the surrounding areas—and provide welcome pain relief.

“This is another example of how we utilize state-of-the-art technology to help our patients live healthier lives,” said Kirk Stensrud, CEO, Glacial Ridge Health System. “We are happy to provide solutions that can enable them to enjoy everyday activities.”

It is reported that after being treated with COOLIEF, most patients can return to their daily lives in a few weeks and many experience up to 24 months of pain relief and improved function.
