On Your Mark, Get Set, Go – GRHS 5K Scrub Run on August 24

You don’t have to go fast, you just have to go. This has been the theme of the Glacial Ridge Health System’s 5K Scrub Run, now in its fifth year. Taking place on Saturday, August 24 at City Park in Glenwood, the Scrub Run is a fun run/walk along Lake Minnewaska. Whether you walk or run, push a stroller or walk your dog, the race is for the entire family. It is about getting active and staying active, it is about moving your body and gaining a healthier lifestyle. Scrubs are optional, but make it more fun; there will be some available to borrow at t-shirt pick up or the day of.

outside picture of woman in scrub top hands medal to man in black t-shirtThe Scrub Run is in memory of, and more appropriately, inspired by Dr. Mark Johnson. He was a beloved physician at GRHS for 25 years who lived a great and active life before losing his fight to pancreatic cancer in 2015. He was often seen walking with his and Mary’s dog Kobi. He enjoyed golf, hiking, and fitness classes at the Wellness Center. We like to think Dr. Johnson would be proud of the Scrub Run, as it brings people together in a dog-friendly and kid-friendly environment.

Proceeds from the race have gone toward different organizations in the past, including Livestrong Foundation and the American Cancer Society. Requested by Mary Johnson, this year’s proceeds will go to Glacial Ridge Hospice. This and other donations help significantly to provide services for hospice patients and their families. “We have a top-notch hospice program through Glacial Ridge, and many families in our area have benefited from the program.” Mary added, “We will forever appreciate the care they helped us provide for Mark in his final days, and how it allowed him to die at home rather than in the hospital. We could call our nurse at any time with questions. Glacial Ridge Hospice is full of caring people and the service they provide is truly amazing.”

Get more details and register for the GRHS 5K Scrub Run/Walk. You can register online or download a form and drop it off with a check at Glacial Ridge Hospital or Glacial Ridge Wellness Center. Please register by August 15 to be guaranteed a shirt! The registration fee through Friday, August 23 is $20 for 13 and older, and $15 for 12 and younger. The cost increases by $5 the morning of the race.

New this year – you can choose either a t-shirt or a racerback tank top! Pat Douvier with Screenprints Plus is a strong supporter of our community and collaborated with GRHS this year to provide the two different shirt options, at the same registration fee. Extra shirts can be ordered for just $12 each. Upgraded from the soft t-shirts of past years, the shirt and tanks are even better and extremely comfortable; it will not be just another race shirt to sit in your drawer.
