Your Guide to a Smooth Colonoscopy Experience

When it comes to our health, certain screenings are essential, and one of the most important is the colonoscopy. While it’s not the most glamorous thing on your to-do list, we know you want to get it done for peace of mind when you’re due –and especially if you’re worried about symptoms. That’s why four experienced doctors at Glacial Ridge Health System have blocked time for colonoscopies. You can generally have your screening or diagnostic test within 2-4 weeks.

Glacial Ridge Health System’s Colonoscopy Clinic is dedicated to helping you stay on top of your health. Here’s what you need to know about colonoscopies, the prep, and why they are crucial for your health.

Why are colonoscopies so important?

Before delving into the prep details, let’s take a moment to appreciate the significance of colonoscopies. These screenings play a crucial role in the early detection and prevention of colorectal issues, including the identification and removal of polyps that could potentially develop into cancer or the removal of tumors early when cancer is most curable.

Colon cancer is among the most common – and preventable – cancers. Yet, in the United States, colon cancer is still the second-leading cause of cancer deaths. Don’t wait until you have symptoms and added anxiety before you do the prep.

Who needs a colonoscopy?

45 is the new 50 when it comes to your first colonoscopy. The American Cancer Society lowered the recommended age due to an increased risk of colorectal cancer in younger age groups. For those with higher risk factors or a family history of colon cancer, your doctor might suggest starting screening exams earlier.

What to Expect at Glenwood’s Colonoscopy Clinic

At Glacial Ridge Health System, we strive to make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Here’s what you can expect when you schedule your colonoscopy in Glenwood:

  1. Availability: With four experienced doctors who have blocked time for these essential screenings, you can have your colonoscopy within weeks, not months.
  2. Preparation: This has come a long way since the era of chalky drinks and enemas. Once it’s done, most people realize the prep was easier than anticipated. You’ll receive detailed instructions on preparing for your colonoscopy and a prep kit during your clinic visit. Two days before the procedure, you’ll only eat low-fiber foods. One day before, you’ll go on a clear-liquid diet. Then, the evening before, you’ll drink a laxative solution mixed in a 32 oz. sports drink that we provide. Most people are done going early enough to get a decent night’s sleep. Proper preparation is crucial for a successful procedure so there’s nowhere for cancer to hide.
  3. The Big Day: The day of the procedure itself is pretty straightforward. Several hours before your arrival time, you’ll drink another 32 oz. of the laxative/sports drink solution to ensure the colon is clear before your arrival. Factoring in time for registration, nurse prep, talking to your doctor and CRNA prior, plus recovery, you can expect to be at the colonoscopy clinic for approximately three hours.
  4. Procedure: The actual procedure takes about 30-60 minutes. You’re under light sedation, so you’ll be comfortable throughout. Most people don’t even remember having it. A flexible tube with a tiny video camera on the end (called a scope) is inserted into the rectum so the doctor can view the colon and look for changes or abnormalities such as cancer or polyps. Doctors can remove small polyps or take tissue samples during the procedure with biopsy tools or wire loops that are passed through the scope. Watch a colonoscopy animation to learn more.
  5. Post-Procedure: After the procedure, a nurse will continue monitoring you in the room until the sedation wears off. You’ll need someone to drive you home, as you won’t be able to drive yourself after having anesthesia. Most people can return to their normal activities the next day.
  6. Getting Results: If everything appears normal during your colonoscopy, the colonoscopy doctor can tell you that day. However, if any polyps were removed or a tissue sample was sent for testing, which is not uncommon, staff will let you know when you can expect to get results. At Glacial Ridge, all patients are notified even when their results are normal. When things need monitoring or further treatment, our doctors will take time to thoroughly explain the condition, answer your questions, and discuss the next steps. They are here to support you every step of the way.
