Local Girl Scouts Earn Life-Saving Skills from Glacial Ridge

Thanks to a generous offer by Glacial Ridge Emergency Services and Training, many local Girl Scouts and leaders are now certified in American Heart Association (AHA) First Aid and CPR.

With a commitment to our community, Glacial Ridge offered the First Aid and CPR classes at no cost to the troops. This valuable partnership equipped these young community members with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively in emergencies, potentially saving lives in the process.

Participating Girl Scouts and adult leaders gained hands-on experience in a variety of essential life-saving techniques, including CPR (with an AED when available), the Heimlich maneuver, and first aid for common and life-threatening injuries. The training boosts their confidence in knowing what to do in an emergency.

Troop 828 leader Kim Olson expressed her gratitude for this opportunity, “We’re grateful to Glacial Ridge for educating and investing in the girls. Not only have they gained essential life-saving skills, but the young women ages 9 to 18 have also learned the importance of community service and the value of helping others in times of need.”

Jodi Armstrong, an instructor and EMT with nearly 20 years of experience shares different types of emergencies in her classes, such as how things can happen and how others using their training have helped in emergencies. This allows people to visualize and better recall what they’re learning.

The classes taught in two evenings resulted in 15 participants receiving First Aid certification and 16 receiving CPR certification; most were able to attend both nights. Jodi said, “The more people who can give CPR before advanced help arrives, the higher the chances of the person’s survival. These girls are involved in many activities, so they have the potential to help many others. That’s why we teach, and I love what I do.” With the AHA First Aid and CPR certifications, these young girls are not just scouts; they are also community heroes in the making.
