Join us in welcoming the newest member of our provider team, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Micala Danielson. She has been an RN at Glacial Ridge Hospital since 2006 and has enjoyed the journey that brought her to where she is today.
“Like most nurses, I always had a feeling that I wanted to care for others. My mom was a nurse and nurse educator, so I saw the enjoyment she had for her career,” Micala shared.
After earning her bachelor’s in nursing from the College of St. Benedict / St. John’s University, Micala joined the Army as a commissioned officer and served on active duty for four years. While working as a nurse, she had an opportunity to complete an OB/Gyn nurse specialty course. “I really enjoyed the variety of work I got to do as an Army nurse,” stated Micala. All of her experiences, from caring for patients to training new nurses in her unit, confirmed her interest and aptitude for OB/nursing and instructing.
Micala worked in St. Cloud Hospital’s Family Birthing Center following active duty. She joined Glacial Ridge Hospital as an RN in 2006, and shortly after, began splitting her time at GRHS with teaching in the Associate Degree (RN) Program at Alexandria Technical and Community College. Balancing both of these roles and her family, Micala also earned her master’s degree from Minnesota State University – Moorhead in nursing with an emphasis in nursing education. “For 12 years, I enjoyed the best of both worlds. I got to care for patients in the hospital as well as sharing my knowledge and skills with students to help them become nurses,” Micala said.
After recently earning her post-graduate certificate at Winona State University, Micala is now a certified Family Nurse Practitioner. “I am excited to merge my two passions into providing and managing care for patients in the clinic,” she said happily. In addition to providing comprehensive family medicine, Micala has a lot of medical interests. With a warm smile, she listed, “obstetrics, women’s health, newborn care, dermatology, adult disease prevention, health promotion, and mental health care.”
Micala began seeing patients at Glenwood Medical Center in December 2021. Additionally, Micala is caring for patients of retired physician Dr. Schlueter while they are in the transition of establishing a new primary care provider in Glenwood.
The slogan “Heartfelt Care” means so much to the community, and Micala knows it is the foundation for the care staff provides. She feels a sense of community among staff at GRHS, providing excellent patient care at each interaction, and has always been glad to be part of it. Micala added, “It’s been fun coming to Glacial Ridge with my nursing students for the clinicals portion of their education – they love it here!”
Micala was raised in rural Alexandria. She and her husband, Nick, have five children – high school through college. In addition to being at their kids’ sporting events and playing sports with them at home, Micala likes helping Nick on their farm near Lowry – moving cattle, caring for calves, and driving tractors. Off solid ground, the family enjoys pontooning on Lake Minnewaska and taking their pontoon to Lake of the Woods on a fishing trip.
