Through his leadership, innovation, and dedication to advancing trauma and emergency care, Tom Pahl, PA-C, is making a lasting impact in both rural Minnesota and across the state. From championing cutting-edge treatments in rural emergency medicine to shaping statewide policies, his work ensures communities receive the highest-quality emergency care.
Recently, Tom was named Chair of the State Trauma Advisory Council (STAC), a prestigious role that reflects his dedication to improving trauma care. In addition to shaping statewide policies, Nate Tiedeman, DNP, an emergency medicine provider at GRHS, highlighted how Tom’s work brings advanced capabilities to the ER: “Tom is always exploring the latest medical advancements and championing their adoption at our hospital, ensuring our rural community has access to cutting-edge capabilities in the ER such as POCUS (bedside ultrasound), iovera (nerve pain block), REBOA (controls torso hemorrhage), and TEE (to quickly assess heart activity)—services not always available, even at large hospitals with specialized care.”
Tom has served on the STAC since 2020, when the Minnesota Commissioner of Health appointed him to represent PAs on the council. During his first term, he served as Vice-Chair, helping shape trauma care policies and initiatives across the state.
Beyond his role in trauma care, Tom has earned statewide recognition for his impact as a physician assistant. In 2021, the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants (MAPA) honored him as PA of the Year for his dedication to clinical excellence, education, and patient care. Outside of clinical practice, he is a committed educator and preceptor for PA students, sharing his expertise through teaching and research. His published work includes a chapter in a renowned ultrasound textbook and two journal articles.
“Tom’s leadership and expertise are making a significant impact on trauma care across Minnesota and strengthening the emergency care we provide in Glenwood,” said Josh Chan, Emergency Department Manager at GRHS. “With Tom’s drive and the skill of our providers, we’re using advanced technology and techniques that enable faster diagnoses and earlier treatments—leading to better patient outcomes. We are fortunate to offer capabilities that exceed those of many hospitals across the state, especially in a rural emergency department.”
Since joining Glacial Ridge Health System in 2014, Tom has been an integral part of the emergency medicine team, continually enhancing care for rural communities. “He truly drives us all to be better every day,” added Nate.
