By Kelly Jones, MSN-Ed, RN, PHN, Program Director of GRHS’s Senior Life Solutions
June kicked off Glacial Ridge Health System’s new Healthy Aging: A Wellness Education Series with a helpful talk on mental health for older adults. Kelly Jones, a registered nurse and Director of the Senior Life Solutions program, led the session.
During the hour-long discussion, the group of 20 attendees explored what mental and emotional health really means—and why it is important at every stage of life. When we feel mentally and emotionally well, life is more enjoyable. We handle stress more effectively, enjoy spending time with others, and feel more hopeful.
Some signs that a person might be struggling include:
- Feeling very sad or lonely
- Having trouble sleeping
- Not wanting to be around others
- Worrying a lot
- Losing interest in favorite activities
The good news is that many simple things can help! The group shared great ideas, like:
- Visiting friends
- Going for a walk
- Listening to the rain
- Doing a puzzle or reading a book
- Gardening or baking
- Writing in a journal
- Talking to a therapist
- Playing cards
- Enjoying faith-based activities
They also learned about mindfulness, a helpful tool for managing anxiety and depression. The group discussed the stigma—or sense of shame—that can sometimes come with talking about mental health, and how we can help reduce it by being open and supportive of one another. Attendees also enjoyed a creative bookmark activity to wrap up the session.
Senior Life Solutions (SLS) is a newer program offered through Glacial Ridge Hospital for older adults navigating life changes. The SLS team provides support through group and individual therapy. Referrals are welcome from anyone; call 320.331.2107 to learn more.
