Pessary for Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Non-Surgical Support for Bladder Leaks and Pelvic Pressure

By Kimberly Spivack-Roelike, CNP, Family Medicine and Walk-In Clinic

A pessary is a small, soft device placed inside the vagina to help support the pelvic organs. It’s a non-surgical treatment option used for conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence, now available at Glacial Ridge.

What Is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Inside a woman’s pelvis are several organs — the bladder, uterus (womb), and rectum (back passage). These organs are normally held in place by muscles and connective tissues called the pelvic floor. When these muscles become weak (after childbirth, menopause, or aging), one or more organs may drop down or bulge into the vagina. This is called pelvic organ prolapse.

Common symptoms include:

  • A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the vagina
  • A bulge or lump that you can feel or see
  • Difficulty urinating or having bowel movements
  • A leaky bladder
  • Vaginal discomfort during certain activities
  • Lower back pain

What Does a Pessary Do?

A pessary acts as an internal support device. It helps to:

  • Hold the pelvic organs in their correct position
  • Reduce the feeling of pressure or bulging
  • Improve bladder control in some cases
  • Allow women to stay active and comfortable

There are many shapes and sizes of pessaries — for example, ring, cube, or donut pessaries. Your healthcare provider will fit and adjust one that’s best for your body and symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions About a Pessary

Will it hurt? A properly fitted pessary should not cause pain. You may feel some awareness at first, but it should quickly become comfortable.

Can I use a pessary long-term? Yes, many women safely use pessaries for years with regular care and checkups.

Will it affect my daily life? Most women can continue all normal activities: walking, exercising, and working, without discomfort.
