After major surgery, a stroke, or a serious illness, many patients aren’t ready to go straight home but no longer need acute hospital-level care. Instead of transferring to a long-term care facility, a rehab center, or another rural hospital farther away, patients living near Glenwood, the Alexandria area, and nearby communities can continue recovering through the Swing Bed (Short-Term Rehab) program at Glacial Ridge.
What Is Short-Term Rehab (Swing Bed Care)?
The term Swing Bed comes from the idea that a hospital patient can “swing” from acute care to skilled rehab care. Once you no longer need full hospital-level treatment but still require care before returning home, you can continue in the same hospital setting. The focus shifts to rehabilitation, with skilled nursing and therapy support, to help you return home safely. For patients treated at larger hospitals, this often means they can transfer to Glacial Ridge Hospital to continue their recovery while staying connected to family and familiar surroundings.
Who Typically Benefits from Swing Bed Care?
Patients may benefit from Swing Bed care when recovering from:
- Significant injury or major surgery
- Stroke or cardiac events
- Illness or infection
- Pulmonary conditions such as pneumonia
- Complex wounds supported by our certified wound care nurse (WOCN)
How Often Will I Receive Therapy?
Therapy at Glacial Ridge is individualized and often more frequent than in many facilities. Patients may receive physical, occupational, and speech therapy, with up to two sessions per day in each discipline, as needed, based on their care plan and progress. When appropriate, therapists may also complete a home safety assessment and recommend adaptive equipment or household changes to lower fall risk and support a smoother transition home.
“Our swing bed patients often go home sooner and stronger because we can offer therapy up to twice daily per discipline when it’s appropriate for their goals,” said Craig Curry, Physical Therapist and Therapy Services Manager.
Is Swing Bed Care Covered by Insurance?
Swing Bed care is covered by Medicare and many private insurers when eligibility criteria are met. Our care team works with patients and families during discharge planning to coordinate coverage and next steps.
